MULLION: METHODIST MONDAY CLUB: After a very busy December, members could have been forgiven for expecting a quieter start to 2008. In fact, January provided plenty to keep them occupied on Monday evenings.
A talk by Noëlle Wilton, explaining the aims and work of Macmillan Cancer Support in Cornwall, was well attended. This is the club's charity objective for the current programme and treasurer Barbara George reports that the fund stands at £850 so far. February has begun with another fundraiser.
Members attending the Old Cornwall Society's January lecture were treated to Tom Symons' description of the work of the National Coastwatch Institution in general and the Bass Point look out in particular. Monday Club visited the outpost a few years ago. Tom's presentation concluded with a link-up enabling the audience to see the actual position of shipping around our coast at that moment.
It was the turn of Barbara George and Julia Hill to set the questions for the Wise Owl Quiz - they had shared the trophy for 2007-08. This is always the quietest hour of Monday Club's year, as questions are pored over, and answers jotted down - or not! At the end of an hour, the Wise Owl trophy returned to past winner Pauline Rowse, together with a book of aerial views. Consolation prize was a Cornish Quiz book containing all the answers!
Finally, the "3T's Tournament" was played. Fourteen hopefuls grasped their paddles and attempted to keep the ping-pong ball under control. Could the trophy be snatched from long-time champion Rosemary Bray? The tense final was played at a hectic pace, with the result uncertain right to the end. Visitor Hilary Lugg had spectators holding their breath and applauding some splendid rallies. But finally the champion drew ahead and won by just a few points - so the trophy will remain with Rosemary for another year!
In Cornwall many people spend time on one of the sandy beaches and shingle coves along the coastline.

Falmouth is playhing host to the start of the event, with a fleet of some 20 Tall Ships arriving by midday on Wednesday September 10 for four days of entertainment and spectacle before leaving on Saturday September 13 in a Parade of Sail preceding the race start.
From this week, walkers out on the sand dunes at Penhale Sands Special Area of Conservation' may come across two very handsome Exmoor ponies, who are helping with the ongoing management of the site.
