PORTHLEVEN

METHODIST CHURCH: Morning worship on Sunday was led by Mrs Sarah Fuller, who took the congregation on a journey through the events leading up to and following Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus.

Members of the congregation taking part were Olive Polglase, Tony Fairless, Marjorie Pascoe, Dorothy Williams, Mildred Pyne and David Balme. David Philp was the organist.

The preacher at the evening service was the minister, the Reverend Colin Short, who took as his theme the words of Jesus "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life". John Gilbert was at the organ.

Thursday of last week was the occasion of the monthly lunch, at which 28 people enjoyed a three-course meal prepared in the chapel kitchen. The lunches are open to the public, but booking is necessary as places are limited.

Porthleven Wives Club: The meeting was opened by Helen Smith, who welcomed the panel for an "Any Questions" evening. The chairman was Mildred Pyne. The panel consisted of Judy Harris, Anita Gronert and John Hall, from Porthleven, and Nigel Pascoe, from Helston.

An array of interesting questions was asked. The next meeting will be held at Porthleven Methodist Church at 7.30pm on Friday, April 25.

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE: April's meeting was very different to the normal ones that are held. Members were joined by Sophie Muir and her friend Martin who gave an insight into the wonderful world of Tai Chi.

They explained that Tai Chi has been practised by the Chinese for thousands of years and doing it every day can be rejuvenating and can also help to ward off stiffness that comes with age. It is also good for getting rid of stress, something we all suffer from in this day and age. The demonstration they gave had members spellbound as they watched in awe. The room was silent - not something that comes to mind easily with a group of women, It wasn't long before members were asked if they could join in. After they had been shown some basic movements and sorted their yin from their yang and connected to their own chi, they were attempting to calm their minds and bodies.

Members all had such an enjoyable time!

The flower of the month competition: 1, Jill Walker; 2, Jane Williams second; 3, Jean Wearing.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 14. Hannah Cook will be coming to talk about "Prancing Paws". If you would like to join you will be most welcome.

The AGM was held in March. Members were joined by Avril Woodcock, a member of the WI and also a VCO, who ensured the order of business was complied with.

Maureen Williams personally thanked everyone who had contributed to what had been a very successful year. Maureen was presented with a gift from the members to show their appreciation for the enormous effort she puts into being president.

There were presentations made in respect of the monthly competitions undertaken throughout the year. Jill Walker gained first prize in the monthly flower competition with Viv Sholl coming second.

There were sufficient nominations received for the new committee so a ballot was not required.

The members voted unanimously for Maureen Williams to be president again.

ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH: Services on the third Sunday of Easter were taken by Father Harry Pugh. Readers at the 9.30am solemn eucharist were Andrew Wood and Dick Powell.

Services during the coming week will be on Thursday at 10am (holy eucharist, celebrant: Canon David Miller), Sunday at 8am (holy eucharist BCP) and 9.30am (solemn eucharist) and on Tuesday at 6.30pm (holy eucharist).

The recent fashion show held at St Bart's was well attended and raised £130 for church funds. The models did a wonderful job and everyone present enjoyed the show. Thanks go to Philippa, manager at Bon Marche, Penzance, for all her hard work in organising the show.

Spring cleaning: the parquet floor is nearly ready for staining. Anyone willing to help in any way is invited to join the small team of volunteers from 1pm on Thursday (jobs can be found for everyone!).

Notice: on Rogation Sunday, April 27, ceremonies will be held at St Sithney at 6pm, then at various locations in the parish ending with refreshments.

Esther Brown's handmade cards are available in St Bart's.

Finally, and topical following the London race - from the mouths of children: the man fell by the roadside and everyone walked past him except the good Sam Marathon.

APOSTOLIC CHURCH, THOMAS STREET: On Sunday, Pastor Glen Chaplin spoke on the second and third epistles of John, which state that the Christian walk should be balanced with truth and love; love without truth leads to liberalism and truth without love leads to legalism.

In the evening service Pastor Glen Chaplin continued the discipleship series with "Our Daily Choice". When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour sin's power has been broken and we can choose the fruits of the Spirit rather than the acts of the flesh each and every day.

Events at the church this week: Tuesday evenings, 7pm-8pm, prayer meeting; Wednesday, 7.30pm, Alpha Course; Thursday, 10am, the Jolly Tots - Parents and Toddlers Group; Friday, 5.45pm-6.45pm, Rock Solid Kids' Club. This club is for children aged 5 to 11 years and offers a foundation in Christian values; Saturday, 10am- 12 noon, coffee morning at the Church; Sunday services take place at 10.45am (crèche facility) and at 6pm.
