PORTHLEVEN
APOSTOLIC CHURCH, THOMAS STREET: On Sunday the guest speaker at the morning service was John Hills, who is the national director of Ambassadors for Christ. He spoke on the adventure of faith with specific reference to Pentecost and the transforming, dynamic experience of the Holy Spirit.
On Sunday afternoon members of the church took part in the Pentecost Service on Tregonning Hill that was organised by Churches Together. In the evening Pastor Glen Chaplin continued the "Freedom in Christ" series and looked at "The Battle For Our Minds". Mary Baldwin presented a Missionary Update and will be arranging a collection to aid the people in Burma, affected by the recent disaster.
Events this week: Tuesday, 7pm-8pm, prayer meeting; Wednesday, 7.30pm, last meeting of the Alpha Course. Another course is planned to take place in the autumn; Thursday, 10am, the Jolly Tots - Parents and Toddlers Group; Friday, 5.45pm, the Rock Solid Kids' Club barbecue; Friday, 7.30pm, church, Youth Group. The Group is open to young people aged 11 years upwards; Saturday, 10am-12 noon, coffee morning at the church; Sunday services take place at 10.45am (crèche facility) and at 6pm. On Sunday the guest speaker is John Densham from Redruth Baptist Church.
Forthcoming events: May 22, 7pm, the Youth Group are planning a Beach BBQ; June 23 a ladies evening is planned in conjunction with Elim Church, St Ives.
ST BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH: Sunday's services for Pentecost were taken by Father Harry Pugh, with Andrew Wood and Ruth Powell reading the lessons at the 9.30am service. Joan Ford read the intercessions.
The services for this week will be on Thursday at 10am (holy eucharist), Sunday (Trinity Sunday) at 8am (holy eucharist) and 9.30am (solemn eucharist) and Tuesday at 6.30pm (holy eucharist).
Choir practice will be on Wednesday at 7.15pm.
This week is Christian Aid week and envelopes are available for donations.
There will be a coffee morning on Friday at 10.30am at the Vicarage with bring and buy stall and raffle. Proceeds for church funds.
Thursday, May 22 is Corpus Christi and St Bart's will celebrate at 7pm with a solemn mass of thanksgiving with procession of the blessed sacrament and benediction, followed by refreshments.
Magazine material for the June edition to be in by Sunday, May 18, please.
The workforce will meet at about 1pm on Thursday and will be doing a little more to make the church look its best. The new chairs have been ordered and anyone wishing to have one of the old wooden ones at £5 each, should contact Fr Harry.
Esther Brown's greetings cards are on sale in church for church funds.
WIVES CLUB: The annual general meeting was opened by Ann Short. The previous year's minutes were read and signed.
The newly elected officers are: chair, Ann Short; vice chair, Helen Smith; booking secretary, Mildred Pyne; minutes secretary, Judy Harris; treasurer, Frances Morris; committee members, Rosemary Polglaze, Judy Mitchell, Marjorie Pryor, Joan Ford, Barbara Strike.
The club, which originates in the churches of the village, welcomes without prejudice women of any or no faith and of any marital status. The club offers a meeting place and an opportunity for friendship through a variety of informative and entertaining meetings. New members to the club are always welcome.
The next meeting will be held on Friday, October 3, at Porthleven Methodist church at 7.30pm.

The full regatta programme for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta has been finalised. Falmouth is playhing host to the start of the event, with a fleet of some 20 Tall Ships arriving by midday on Wednesday September 10 for four days of entertainment and spectacle before leaving on Saturday September 13 in a Parade of Sail preceding the race start.
From this week, walkers out on the sand dunes at Penhale Sands Special Area of Conservation' may come across two very handsome Exmoor ponies, who are helping with the ongoing management of the site.
The Zutons have been confirmed to join Groove Armada on the mainstage on Friday 08th August at the Rip Curl Boardmasters Unleashed Festival, the South West's largest live music festival The Zutons, Liverpool's first great band of the 21st century release their highly anticipated new album, You Can Do Anything, through Deltasonic on Monday, June 2.
