STITHIANS
VILLAGE CENTRE: The official opening of the new Stithians Centre takes place on Saturday, March 8 between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
The new centre is the result of many years' work by the community in Stithians to provide a refurbished and extended village hall. The Stithians village hall management committee, a registered charity run by volunteers, has managed the project. The centre will house the Stithians Pre School in their own dedicated room, a community library, an IT suite for adult education and community use, and the original village hall used by yoga groups, Rainbows, Brownies, Women's Institute, parish council, luncheon club for senior citizens, young people's bands and many more local organisations.
Daphne Skinnard of Radio Cornwall will be cutting the ribbon at 10.30am. Some representatives of the funding bodies will be present. Local groups and users of Stithians centre will be advertising their activities. St Stythians silver band will be playing.
As part of the morning, Stithians village hall management committee will be holding their St Piran's coffee morning once again. Stalls and tables promoting and selling local produce and craft will be in the hall. All proceeds from the event, (apart from those of the local producers, who usually donate something to the village hall), will go towards maintaining the new Stithians centre and supporting any activities there.
METHODIST CHURCH: Mrs Jenny Lockwood led an All Age Worship service on Sunday morning dedicated to Mothering Sunday.
During the service several young people, children and adults from the congregation told of the importance of their mothers in their lives. There was also a dramatic dialogue between Jenny Lockwood and Brenda Barson.
In the evening, the Rev Brian Mavers led a celebration of the Lord's Supper. The reader was Brenda Barson, and the Stithians folk were joined by some members of the congregation of Lanner Methodist Church. Organist at both services was Colin Anthony.
P&O Ferries has signed a contract with Aker yards to build two large car-passenger ferries for the Dover-Calais service. The price for both vessels is said to be EUR 360 million.
The weather may have let them down but the runners did organisers proud at this year’s Mawnan Fun Run.
