Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority is auctioning five lengths of rigged gill nets after they were seized in Mounts Bay.

The nets were seized from Mounts Bay because they were placed and used contrary to a local byelaw. The nets were held for a statutory period of 3 months, during which time nobody came forward to claim them.

The nets will be available to view at Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority office at Clare Street, Penzance,on Monday, July 28 between 9am and 1pm.

The sale will be by sealed bid auction with submissions required by 5pm on Wednesday, July 30.

Each net is approximately 200m long and 3m deep and in good/new condition with minimal damage to some meshes. The average mesh size is between 3½” and 4” (90.8mm, 92mm, 92.4mm, 94mm and 99.2mm). The headlines are rigged with floats set at 1.5 - 2.5m intervals and there are lead-line footropes. Ends are marked with netted footballs and ‘wash ball’ buoys.

Proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Fishermen’s Mission.
