The RNLI is preparing to finish its lifeguard patrols on the majority of the region’s beaches this Sunday, however, a number of beaches in Cornwall and Devon will have lifeguard cover into October.

The charity will continue to provide safety cover on the regions busiest beaches at weekends in October and during the October school half term week, finishing on Sunday 2 November.

These beaches are: Praa Sands, Gwithian, Porthmeor, Porthtowan, Perranporth, Polzeath and Widemouth.

At Summerleaze in Bude, RNLI lifeguards are volunteering their time and working with volunteers from Bude Surf Lifesaving Club to provide the same cover in October.

Fistral beach will have lifeguard cover every day in October and voluntary patrols at weekends in November.

Steve Instance, RNLI lifeguard manager, said: "It’s been another successful year for the RNLI lifeguards patrolling the beaches of Cornwall and Devon. We’ve seen a large amount of visitors making the most of the prolonged warm weather and although we have seen some challenging conditions arise from the aftermath of the winter storms, the lifeguard teams have worked extremely hard to keep people safe and away from the hazards.

"As the season draws to a close, we’re pleased to again be able to provide lifeguard cover on a number of the region’s busiest beaches into October, providing patrols for those looking to prolong their summer and enjoy the favourable surf conditions autumn brings.

"Our advice to people visiting the beach is to choose one with extended lifeguard cover, as the teams will be on hand to help should you need them to. Those who can't make it to a lifeguarded beach can help keep themselves safe by taking note of the safety signage at the entrance to the beach, going with a friend or telling someone on the shore where they are going, and being aware of the conditions and their own capabilities in the water."
