Organisers of year's 'Race for Wildlife' have put out a call for runners for the event on Sunday, December 7.

The seven mile race in aid of Cornwall Wildlife Trust sets off through the countryside north of Penzance and takes in breath-taking views of Mounts Bay and St Michaels Mount.

The event organised by the Mounts Bay Harriers and Cornwall Wildlife Trust is now in its fourth year and will once again be hosted at Penwith College.

The challenging event is an established part of the Cornwall Multi Terrain Race Series and attracts some of the county’s top runners.

The race takes in off-road tracks with Cornish stiles to cross, uneven stony ground across the moors, as well as tarmac roads. The first half of the run is uphill with the second half being downhill, with a slight kick uphill to the finish at Penwith College.

Race for Wildlife is open to anyone over the age of 16 and both the Harriers and the Trust would like to encourage anyone who is "passionate about our beautiful county to take part and raise vital funds". Previous years have seen over 200 runners taking part and nearly £5,000 raised.

Yvonne Turner, event organiser for Mounts Bay Harriers said: "We are delighted to once again be working with Cornwall Wildlife Trust to organise Race for Wildlife. We see them as a very important charity and will be donating a percentage of all entrance fees to them as well as encouraging participants to actively fundraise for the Trust.

"The route is challenging but the views are spectacular and whether chasing a personal best or just taking part this is a fun and rewarding day out.”

To fundraise for Cornwall Wildlife Trust and raise vital money for their work protecting Cornwall’s wildlife and wild places please give them a call on (01872) 273939 for a sponsorship form.

Howard Curnow, Trustee at Cornwall Wildlife Trust said: “We want the Race for Wildlife to raise as much money as possible for Cornwall’s wildlife. There is still a huge challenge ahead to ensure Cornwall’s natural environment and the fantastic wildlife we have is protected for future generations.

"From our bottlenose dolphins to the rare dormouse, to the wonderful heathlands found in Penwith, we work to protect Cornwall’s wildlife and wild places. Runners raising sponsorship will make a real difference to their local wildlife.”

The race starts at 10.00am with registration opening at 8.30am. Pre entry for both is advised although it will be possible to enter on the day. Unfortunately the route is not suitable for wheel chair users. Dogs are not permitted.

Race HQ, parking, baggage area, toilets and showers are at Porthcurnow Building, Penwith College, St Claire Street, Penzance, Cornwall TR18 2SA.

Pre-entry fee for Race for Wildlife is £12 or £10 for UK Athletics members. On the day entry fee is £14 or £12 for UK Athletics members.
