A person was pulled from a blazing bedroom in Penzance last night in a dramatic rescue by firefighters.

The fire broke out in Penrose Terrace just before 9.30pm.

Two crews from Penzance were initially sent to the scene, made up of 11 firefighters in total.

They immediately called for back up, with another six firefighters from St Just arriving soon afterwards.

The house involved was a large, mid terrace property and crews confirmed there was a fire in a first floor bedroom.

They entered the building wearing breathing equipment and using ahose reel, and at 9.46pm crews had rescued one casualty, who was given oxygen while waiting for ambulance crews to arrive. At 9.50pm a call was sent for extra back up and another six firefighters from St Ives were sent.

At this time four sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reels were in use.

By 10.21pm the fire was being fought in the roof space of the building, with crews using six breathing apparatus, and one hydrant was in use.

The gas and electricity supply to the building were isolated and at that stage it was reported crews were making "good progress".

Once the main body of the fire was extinguished one fire crew remained on scene for an hour and a half, damping down and turning over hot spots.

One casualty was taken to hospital via ambulance.

A fire investigation is being carried out at the property this morning.
