A planning application has been submitted for three new retail units on one of the last pieces of land available on the former heliport site at Eastern Green.

Consolidated Property Group (CPG) has submitted plans for a £7.5 million development adjacent to the new Sainsbury’s. The units will be occupied by Pets at Home, Poundland and an unnamed operator.

Poundland has vowed to keep its store in Penzance town centre open.

Martin Ridgway, MD of CPG, said: “We have looked at several proposals for this site but the ground conditions are very difficult and restrict us in what we can do.

"Retail is the only viable option and also complements the existing nearby uses.

The operators have been looking to open new outlets in the town for some time and there are other retailers interested in coming to Penzance so the final unit will soon be taken.

“The scheme has been designed to complement the Sainsbury’s design so that it is aesthetically pleasing and creates a gateway to the town.

"We have held meetings with local stakeholders to explain the benefits of the scheme and are listening to their comments on the design as we appreciate it is a high profile location.

"This is a significant investment for Penzance and will create over 50 jobs with up to a further 50 during construction.”

The three units will be accessed off the existing junction to Sainsbury’s on the A30 trunk road and there will be 67 car parking spaces.

If the planning application is successful the new units will be open by the end of 2016.
