A woman and two children were rescued from the first floor of a Penzance building during a kitchen fire on Saturday morning.

Firefighters from Penzance, St Just and St Ives used a ladder to reach a first floor window and rescue the group, while their colleagues wearing breathing apparatus forced an entry into the building in Mount Street and extinguished the fire using a high pressure hosereel jet.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Cornwall Fire & Rescue personnel proceeded to rescue one female and two small children, who were taken in to the care of attending ambulance crews, who were then transferred to West Cornwall Hospital for a precautionary check up."

They added: "Fortunately the premises had a working smoke detector and raised the alarm."

Devon & Cornwall Police were also in attendance, which occurred at around 9am.
