Firefighters continue to battle a blaze which has continued into a third day at a St Erth recycling centre.

Last night, Cornwall Fire and Rescue service reported that the fire was being managed "in three sectors," and the response was "likely to be scaled back," but this morning crews were "still on scene working hard to fight the fire."

Representatives from the fire service, South Western Ambulance Service, and a rail liason officer, all met first thing this morning, with another meeting at 10am.

SW Tyre and Rubber Recyclers, the company whose premises is at the heart of the fire, has issued a statement on Facebook, thanking people for their support and apologising for any problems the fire has caused.

The company's owners, Kathy and Mark Bailey, wrote: "We'd like to thank all of our wonderful friends, family and co-workers for all their support during this incredibly difficult time.

"We are devastated for our employees who have worked so loyally for us for over 12 years and devastated to have lost not only our livelihood but many personal effects such as a hand made vintage car and many items of sentimental value from Kathy's parents who are both now deceased."

They said their daughter's turtle, Alfie, "who had become a loved company mascot" is believed to have died in the fire.

They said: "Everyone had a little chat with him or gave him some food when passing him in the office. So sorry Alfie."

They added: "We finished work on Monday evening and all usual safety checks were completed. We can only hope that the fire service is able to shed light on the cause of the blaze. We've so far been unable to access the site to ascertain if anything is salvageable but it isn't looking good.

"Huge thanks to the police who were so great last night when we were in such shock (Thank you Nicky) and to the fire service who worked so tireless throughout the night, they deserve all the praise they get.

"Our thoughts also go to the residents of St Erth who bore the brunt of the smoke, we're so sorry you had to endure that, and also to all of the travellers who's journeys were so badly and lengthily disrupted."

Great Western Railway has resumed service between Truro and Penzance, with some delays, although the service between St Erth and St Ives remains suspended, with a replacement bus service, and trains are not stopping at St Erth.
