Penzance has been named as one of the New York Times' top recommended holiday destinations for 2017, thanks in large part to the newly restored Jubilee Pool.

The town was listed 14th in the US newspaper's 52 Places to Go in 2017 article, ranking alongside top Swiss ski resort Zermatt, the natural wonder of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Times writer David Shaftel said Penzance was "having a moment" thanks to the popularity of the BBC's most recent Poldark adaptations, and was also making its name as a "culinary destination."

But his main praise was for the town's newly restored lido, and he wrote: "Perhaps the best thing to see in Penzance - aside from the scenery - is the Art Deco-inspired Jubilee pool, one of Europe’s last saltwater lidos. The enormous triangular public pool was built in the 1930s and just underwent a $3.73 million renovation."

The Friends of Jubilee Pool, the group behind the rebuilding of the pool, welcomed the news.

The group wrote on its Facebook wall: "We've always said that Jubilee Pool will prove to be a catalyst for the economic benefit for Penzance, we hope you'll agree."

Julian Phillips commented: "Great news and great publicity - we need more of this and encourage more open minded people in the town to change Penzance for the better."

The grade II listed pool was reopened in May last year following repair works, which had to be carried out after it was damaged in storms in 2014.

It had been run by leisure provider Tempus Leisure, although the Friends and the town council are currently searching for an operator for this season after the leisure group failed to secure a new contract for Cornwall Council's leisure provision.
