FIVE members of Portreath Surf Life-saving Club have been selected for the Great Britain team that will be taking part in a surf lifesaving international in Japan.

The event, the Sanyo Bussan International Lifesaving Cup, takes place at Katase Nishihama Beach in the Shonan area of Fujisawa City, 50 km south west of Tokyo.

The team members from Portreath who will be taking part in the event from August 27 to September 3 are Mark Lewarne, David Green, Josh Harris, Warren Trestrail, and Katy Whear.

They will be competing against teams from Australia, USA, South Africa, and Japan. The Australians will provide a strong team and will go into the competition as favourites, but the Great Britain team will also be sending a team packed with former and currrent European Champions and are experienced on the international scene.

The trip is an expensive one to fund, but one of the sponsors, Mark Lewarne, has secured some personal sponsorship for the event.

"Without the sponsors it would make the trip very difficult to finance, so I am very grateful for Frame Homes, Falmouth Yacht Brokers, as well as Penponds General Services for providing such a good level of support and making this opportunity possible.
