Helston Athletic 2

Russell, Eddy

Godolphin Atlantic 0

Helston Athletic breezed past title rivals Godolphin Atlantic to book their place in the next round of the Cornwall Charity Cup after a 2-0 victory at Kellaway Parc.

Goals from Liam Eddy and Tom Russell either side of half-time were enough to secure the win and go some way towards avenging Helston’s 5-1 league defeat at the hands of the G’s earlier this season.

Russell latched on to a teasing Dan Stidwell cross with a diving header with 32 minutes on the clock.

And Eddy popped up with 67 minutes gone to rifle in Mark Mark Goldsworthy’s cross at the far post to seal the win for Sid Taylor’s Blues.

In truth the margin could have been more, with Mark Goldsworthy clipping the outside of the post from the penalty spot after ref John Barnicoat had blown for a foul on Eddy in the box, before Eddy blasted a shot straight at the keeper from eight yards out.

Godolphin for their part never looked like threatening, and were restricted to shots on goal from distance, none of which troubled Helston keeper Jason Robertson.

Indeed the home side were lucky to finish the game with 11 men when Richard Griffin escaped a second yellow card for kicking the ball away in disgust.
