Brave Eagles shot down by troublesome Teigns

TEIGNMOUTH 39

FALMOUTH EAGLES 3

THE Eagles were reluctant to play this rearranged fixture, which was originally cancelled due to Teignmouth’s water logged pitch the previous week.

The league insisted it had to be played when regrettably several players were unavailable on what was supposed to be a free Saturday.

Teignmouth, sitting prominently at the top of the Devon and Cornwall League duly collected five points towards to what they hope to be promotion as champions.

The home team started well with two catches and drives combined with a rolling maul, both from 22m,  and were leading with only six minutes on the clock by ten points.

The tries were both scored by Colin Aldworth, three minutes into the second half.

Teignmouth’s full-back Peter Parsons scored an unconverted try and while Eagles defended heroically with fantastic tackling by centre and man-of-the match Alex Kindjarsky, Matt Gigg and Antony Geech could not stop the superiority who added further tries from Josh Davey, Chris Tideman and in stoppage time, Ray Jones.

Full back Tom Spiller popped over a penalty to spare the Eagles a whitewash, and yet the team defended well.

For most teams, but not the Eagles, the writing could have been on the wall for an 80 points defeat. The whole team buckled down to defend their fort like the Alamo and completely started the home supporters who had come to the same conclusion that a riot was on the cards. Their third try arrived just before the break when Mark Annal claimed a pushover.

This game could have resulted in  a larger defeat and not surprisingly all played above their expectations.

On Saturday the Eagles are at home to Tiverton (third in the league) and I am sure given availability a surprise result would not be out of the question. Kick off 2.30pm.
