Helston Athletic put in a superb battling performance to secure their spot in the semi-finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup by overcaming premier division Liskeard 5-3 after extra time.

The game was marred by some bizarre refereeing decisions which saw Sid Taylor and Ashley Stidwell red carded from the dugout, and Liskeard captain Lee Blatchford dismissed for a bad tackle on Helston striker Mark Goldsworthy.

Liskeard took the lead thanks to Robbie Almond's cool finish, but two goals in two minutes from Goldsworthy and strike partner Liam Eddy put the Blues in control.

Almond scored his second after half time to tie the scores, and with neither side able to land a killer blow in 90 minutes, the game went to extra time.

Eddy smashed his second of the afternoon in off the underside of the bar to put Heslton 3-2 up, before referee Paul Forse seeemed to change his mind after apparently awarding Helston a free kick for a foul on Kirk Davies in the box.

After consulting his linesman, Forse reversed his decision and awarded Liskeard a penalty. Almond stepped up to send Jason Robertson the wrong way and complete his hat trick.

But Helston kept their composure, and when Ben Stidwell stabbed home Heslton's fourth after a goalmouth scramble, the result looked safe.

It was left to Eddy to round off the scoring minutes from full time to make it 5-3. Helston will play Glynn Hooper's Newquay at in the semi-final. the game will be played at Treyew Road on March 5.
