TRURO CITY 3

Afful, Watkins (2)

HAYES AND YEADING 1

Kendall (OG)

An Andy Watkins brace helped Truro City do the double over Hayes and Yeading, boosting their slender hopes of survival with a first home win since December.

Both sides missed early opportunities to open the scoring, Barry Hayles blazing over for Truro after good work down the left by AndyWatkins, and Jerome Anderson cutting inside his marker before dragging his shot wide for Hayes and Yeading.

But just before half time Truro took the lead, Hayles hooking a through ball over his shoulder for Watkins, whose low cross found Les Afful sliding in at the near post to put City a goal up.

Ten minutes after the break Truro made it two. Player manager Lee Hodges was fouled on the half way line, he stepped up to fire a free kick flat and low into the box where Ben Gerring flicked it on. Hayes and Yeading players called for offside, but Watkins didn't wait for a whistle, taking it on his chest before calmly rounding Louis Wells and slotting in.

The visitors put City under real pressure in the second half, eventually pulling one back thanks to Paul Kendall's own goal after a lightning counter attack caught Truro's defence cold.

But City made sure of their first home win since December on the stroke of full time when Watkins raced onto a Marcus Martin through ball before lobbing Wells, and sparking scenes of jubilation.

Truro City: Payne, Hodges, Gerring, Kendall, Williams, Cooke, Martin, Afful, Hayles (Wright 90), Watkins. Subs (not used): Watts, Hall

LEEDS CARNEGIE  37

CORNSIH PIRATES  25

Despite leading at half time the Cornish Pirates were unable to hang on for the win away at Leeds Carnegie on Sunday.

Defeat at Cross Green dealt a potentially fatal blow to the Pirates' hopes of making the RFU Championship playoffs, with the Cornish side slipping to sixth in the table one place behind Sunday's opponents.

Leeds took an early lead thanks to a penalty in the first minute, before tries from Kieran Hallett and Paul Andrew put the Pirates back in control.

But a lack of discipline would prove costly for the Pirates, as Leeds made the most of a slew of penalties awarded in their favour to put points on the board.

Even so, the visitors held out until ten minutes after the restart when former Pirate Matt Smitt touched down, and five minutes from time another Mennaye old boy David Docherty made sure of the win for Leeds.

Matt Evans scored a late consolation try for the Pirates on the stroke of full time, but by then the game was over in all but name.

Elsewhere a ruthless Penryn display saw the Borough outclass league leaders Bideford 34-19 at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.

The home side provded too strong for their table-topping opponents, making it three games unbeaten in Western Counties West. Penryn sit ffifth in the league, a single point behind fourth placed Devonport Services.

Truro were comprehensively beaten by league leaders St Austell at Tregorrick Park, who draw level with Bideford at the top of the league.
