HELSTON ATHLETIC 1

Goldsworthy (89)

PORTHLEVEN 2

Shainberg (31), J Annear (34)

A superb first half display saw Porthleven stun fierce rivals Helston to claim victory Kellaway Parc in the Good Friday derby.

The win for the Fishermen surely puts paid to any hopes Helston had of claiming the division one west title after league leaders Godolphin extended their lead at the top of the table after beating Wadebridge 2-0 at Bodieve Park.

In howling wind and freezing conditions Porthleven made the brighter start of the two sides, with their hosts uncharacteristically quiet.

Port opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when Jowan Shainberg ran on to a ball played across the edge of the box to hammer a low drive into the bottom corner past Helston keeper Jason Robertson.

Three minutes later Robertson was picking the ball out of his net again after Jordan Annear curled a sublime free kick over the Helston wall from 25 yards out.

Helston came close to pulling a goal back on the stroke of half time, but despite goalkeeper - and manager - Dennis Annear having little to do in the first half, he remained alert enough to palm Tom Russell's volley from just inside the six yard box onto the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

After the break Helston came alive, but found Porthleven defenders Dan Tarrant and Tom Annear in fine form at the back.

And despite having several goalscoring opportunites, Porthleven managed to keep the home side quiet until the 89th minute when Goldsworthy fired in from an acute angle.

But with too little time left to salvage anything from the game Helston were left to rue what might have been.

Port dug in and saw the clock down to register a famous win that all but ends the Blues' title hopes.
