In football Falmouth Town registered back to back wins in the Peninsula League premier division for the first time this season by beating Ivybridge Town 3-1 at Bickland Park on Saturday.

It was the perfect way for joint manager Les Gilbert to finish a week in which he became a grandfather for the first time.

Sam Bromley opened the scoring for Town after 11 minutes when he reacted quickest to stab the ball in from six yards out after Rob Wearne's shot had been deflected.

But Ivybridge hit back when Richard Kellow was adjudged to have fouled Steve Sutton inside the area and referee George Patterson awarded a penalty.

Ethan Fearn, deputising for the absent Jason Chapman, saved Todd Hanrahan's spot kick, only for the linesman to demand it be retaken. Hanrahan scored at the second time of asking.

Three minutes later Town were back in front when Ross Pope's shot hit the hand of Ivybridge captain Stuart Morgan and once again Mr Patterson pointed to the spot.

Glenn Squires calmly rolled his penlaty down the middle to restore Town's lead.

And two minutes from time Falmouth made sure of the points when Dan Richardson won the ball back in midfield before threading a perfectly weighted pass for man of the match Wearne, who slid the ball past stand-in Ivybridge keeper Josh Zimmerman to make it 3-1.

In division one west Helston bounced back from their 1-2 home defeat against fierce rivals Porthleven in the most emphataic manner by hammering Perranporth 11-0 at Kellaway Parc.

Mark Goldsworthy hit a hat trick, as did Dan Stidwell. Liam Eddy scored a brace, with Nigel Thwaites and Charlie Young chipping in with a goal apiece. An own goal completed the rout for Helston, who despite winning slipped to third place in the table.

That was after title rivals Wadebridge Town beat Porthleven at Gala Parc - although the Bridgers had more than their fair share of good fortune.

Paul Cox scored the only goal of the game after almost eight minutes of time added on at the end of 90 minutes.

Port had chances to score themselves, but despite Jordan Annear and Dan Tarrant's fine strikes on goal, they found keeper Tom Vercoe in excellent form to deny them a share of the points.

Meanwhile relegated Truro City were denied victory by a stoppage time goal at home against Eastbourne Borough.

Goals from Stewart Yetton and Barry Hayles looked to have secured all three points for the home side, before Ollie Rowe hit back for the visitors.

Even so it looked as though City would hang on, until Darren Lok's scrappy goal in time added on denied Truro the win.

And to make matters worse for the White Tigers, midfielder Marcus Martin was sent off right at the death for elbowing an Eastbourne player.

In rugby, Penryn got back to winning ways in the league with a fine 20-36 victory over Exeter Saracens away from home.

But it was a less succesful weekend for Falmouth Eagles, who were on the wrong end of a 36-0 thumping at the hands of league leaders Teignmouth.

In the British and Irish Cup quarter finals, the Cornish Pirates suffered an agonising last gasp defeat at the hands of Munster A at the Mennaye.

The Pirates were in the lead right up until the last minute when Munster scored a late try to break the home fans' hearts.
