With the evening temperatures reaching the high twenties, the 457 runners who lined up at Trickys, Redruth  for the Brooks Summer Turkey Trot were no doubt relieved that this four mile race was the shortest of the 2013 Cornwall Grand Prix Series, sponsored by Cornwall Glass and Glazing.

Trickys, Redruth have sponsored the summer version of this race since it was first run in 2000 and last week's race was the fourteenth running of the event and probably the hottest.

The early leader Phil Wilson (Cornwall AC) led the charge on the first fast downhill mile and had opened a 30 metres gap at the top of the punishingly steep uphill towards Paynter's Lane End.

Perhaps the Cornwall AC runner  had started a little too quickly, being caught and passed before the half way point by the eventual winner, Tony Brewer (Mile High), soon to be followed by  runner up, St Austell Running Club's Dan Alsop and then third placed finisher Justin Thomas (Cornwall AC).

Brewer is certainly enjoying a rich vein of form having won the last three Grand Prix races and despite the hot conditions, ran his fastest time on this course (21.03), finishing fifteen seconds ahead of Alsop, who in turn crossed the line ten seconds clear of Thomas.

Wilson (21.44) held on over the closing stages, despite being chased down by training partner Callum Jones (Cornwall AC), who clocked 21.53, six seconds ahead of the Cornwall AC Men's team captain and Veteran 50 winner Dave Buzza.

No Surprises in the Ladies race, with  the pre race favourite, Cornwall AC's Emma Stepto, finishing 14th overall and winning comfortably, just four days before making her debut in the 5000 metres at the following Sunday's British Track and Field Championships in Birmingham.

Emma's time of 22 minutes 46 seconds lifts her to second place on the Turkey Trot All Time List, which dates back to the first Christmas version of this race in 1994.  Great Britain's Triathlon Junior international, Issy Steele, making her road running debut for Cornwall AC,  finished second in 26 minutes 13 seconds and also won the Under 20 prize.

Issy finished twenty seven seconds ahead of East Cornwall Harriers evergreen Veteran  Revis Crowle, who won the 50-54 category by over four minutes.

Cornwall  AC made another step towards retaining their Grand Prix team titles with comfortable victories in the team events, ahead of Newquay Road Runners in both competitions.

In the Men's race, Cornwall AC, with the help of a couple of their up and coming youngsters, Wilson and Jones, finished all six of their scoring runners in the top ten, with Ceri Whitmore (9th) bringing the team  home.

Newquay Road Runners continue to show a gradual improvement in the team standings, finishing second in the Men's race, sandwiched between the Cornwall AC teams, with the host club's 'B' team filling third spot.

The Cornwall AC's Ladies, who recorded their seventh Grand Prix victory of the year, also included a couple very promising youngsters, with the race runner up Issy Steele joined by the 'A' team's sixth scorer Caitlin Mulroy, who was seventeenth overall.

Newquay again filled the runner's up position, comfortably clear of third placed Hayle Runners.
A large contingent of thirty four Falmouth Road Runners made the short journey across to Redruth, with two of the Falmouth Ladies grabbing the headlines.

Diane King finished ninth in the Ladies race, clocking 28 minutes 29 seconds, just missing out on an age group prize, finishing fourth in the Veteran 35-39 category.

Diane beat team mate Tammy Jenkin by two seconds and two places, although Tammy did have the satisfaction of winning an age group prize, finishing second in the Under 35 section.  In the Men's competition Richard Dalton again led the way for Falmouth finishing in sixteenth place, crossing the finish line in 22 minutes 47 seconds.

The new owner of Trickys John Milan presented the prizes and commented afterwards, "It was great to see so many runners and their families turn up this evening.

I hope everyone enjoyed the use our facilities and we look forward to welcoming even more back to Trickys in 2014, if not sooner.  It was a pleasure to work alongside Cornwall Athletic Club and we will do our best to ensure this event continues to prosper."
