Helston 317-8

Paul II 132

Helston’s impressive form with the bat continued at Beacon Park on Saturday as they saw off the challenge of Paul seconds by the huge margin of 185 runs.

A fortnight earlier the record books were rewritten with the 414 against Leedstown. On Saturday the 300 mark was passed again as a total of 317 for eight was posted.

No-one got 30 for the visitors as they were dismissed for 132 in 40 overs. Dan Jenkin won the toss and elected to bat. Jenkin and Stuart Pethick then carried on from where they left off at Rosudgeon the previous week.

At the Playing Field they put on an unbroken 154 to win the game by ten wickets. They were not far off repeating the feat on Saturday either as they got to 135 before Jenkin was dismissed by Jack Lugg for 76. It was made off 68 balls with a six and nine fours and sees him past 900 league runs for the season. Pethick and Chris Martin saw the 200 up with only one wicket down.

Pethick was finally dismissed by Tom Ruhrmund for 87. It was made off 89 balls and included a six and 14 fours. Martin followed soon after for 40. Justin Matthews hit 37 at a run a ball and with Josh Ninnis, Steve Jenkin, Tom Retallack and Kannan Mathivannan all getting into double figures an imposing total was on the board. Paul used seven bowlers with Lugg the most successful with three for 70.

Paul got to 36 without lose before the aptly named Ollie Paull fell to Peter Boyd for 15. Max Miller took the total to 48 before four wickets fell for 16 runs in a mini collapse. Martin Oats made 29 and Dan Smith 22, both with first team experience, but the game had effectively been long over however. Boyd completed his 12 over spell to take four for 40.

Steve Jenkin took three for 30 and Pethick two for 13. The win keeps Helston clear at the top of the table. The lead is now 31 points over Falmouth seconds, who dropped a point in beating bottom side Leedstown on Saturday.

Seven games remain with three at home, including Falmouth seconds on August 10. Helston visit Redruth seconds on Saturday, who are currently in eighth spot.
