GOLF: Budock Vean holds annual charity day
12:00pm Sunday 18th August 2013 in Sport
Budock Vean was the place to be for golfers on Sunday as the club held its popular annual open Charity Day with competitors from all over West Cornwall playing in a four ball better ball competition.
The sun shone, the breeze was light, but some very tricky pin positions made scoring quite difficult.
Not so difficult for the three overall prize winners, who returned some very impressive scores. Overall first place went to Paul and Carol Davis with 43 points, just beating the unlucky Tony Clarke and Charlie Scorse on countback. Colin Bowden and Andrew Varney were third with 42 points Many other prizes were presented by the ladies’ and mens’ captains who thanked all the people who had worked so hard to make the day a great success. In particular the Barlow family were thanked for allowing free use of the golf course, and Fay and Julian Joffe who every year, since time began, have organised and donated the prize for the putting competition.
Following the presentation Des "Flog It" Sadler conducted the auction, which raised more money for the two charities Macmillan Cancer and Shelterbox. The total figure raised for the day had still not been finalised at the time of going to press but was already very impressive at over £3000 On Saturday the club played Praa Sands in the Small Clubs Championships. Wins for Chris Mason, Dave Allen, Tony Grace, Dennis McQuillan, Geoff Mills, and Rob Gibson saw the Vean win 6-1 and they now just need a convincing win at Clowance next Saturday to reach the final.
On Wednesday the Ladies played the L.W.G.A Medal. In form Nina Hann won comfortably with a fine net 66.
Second was Shirley Mildren with a net 68. Third was Lesley Upperton with a net 69 just beating Jenny Wake on countback.
Thanks must once again go to Ken Cocking, who year after years sponsors the pasites supplied by Tickle Your Taste Buds.
