Truro City draw with Bedford in Southern League opener
12:54pm Sunday 18th August 2013 in Sport
Jordan Copp's late penalty salavaged a point for Truro City in their first game back in the Southern League against Bedford.
In the pouring rain at a windswept Treyew Road, Truro looked to be heading for a disappointing 2-1 opening day defeat, until Copp's spot kick right at the death salvaged a point for Steve Massey's side.
City handed debuts to Dan Evans, Warren Daw, Jared Sims and Jed Harper-Penman, and looked the better side during the opening half hour.
The White Tigers deservedly took the lead in the 32nd minute when Les Afful collected captain Jake Ash's superb cross-field ball, out-muscled marker Jordan Jarrold and lashed a low shot into the bottom corner.
Bedford had their claims of a foul on Jarrold in the build-up dismissed by referee Andrew Bennett, who sent furious Eagles manager Lee Bearman to the stands.
Bedford found the back of the net just before the break, when Andrew Philips cut through the City defence and rolled his shot into an empty net with Truro keeper Olly Chenoweth stranded.
And the visitors made it two minutes after the restart when Jarrold's lofted free kick was allowed to bounce in the box and somehow go in.
Shane White hit the bar for City, but with barely a minute left on the clock Ash charged into the box and had his heels clipped, prompting referee Bennett to point to the spot.
And up stepped Copp to smash his penalty kick into the roof of the net and secure a point for City.
