Devoran Gig Club ladies complete season in fine style
6:52am Monday 2nd September 2013 in Sport
It is fair to say that the County Gig Rowing Championships at Newquay is never a dull affair and this year proved to be especially interesting for the Devoran ladies who completed their season in fine style with two crews finishing well up the rankings.
The competition start was delayed on Saturday due to blustery conditions and a 'bouncy' sea state which made the exit and entry to the harbour very tricky indeed.
The delay increased the nerves for all the rowers and as the racing go ahead was finally given, the Devoran C Crew took a measured decision to withdraw from the competition due to the continuing difficult sea conditions. A long day eventually finished with both ladies A and B crews qualifying for the second round which took place the following morning.
Sunday morning dawned to much calmer water which meant the race times were significantly faster than on the previous day. The Devoran B crew were first out on the water and had a splendid performance finishing in 36th position overall. Crew member Fran Brennan said: "We are really happy with that result as 90 gigs started the competition. It was a fast, strong and powerful row from our crew and a great way to finish off the season"
The Ladies A crew were up against some very strong crews in the second round. Following a strong performance the crew was delighted to continue through to the quarter finals. With very little recovery time, the Devoran crew gave everything they had to finish the day in an outstanding 24th place. A pod of three dolphins escorted them round part of the course - an unforgettable experience in more ways than one for the rowers.
An excellent weekend for the Devoran ladies crews provides encouragement for the men who row at their County Championship competition on the weekend of 14th September.
