Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu comes to Falmouth
1:00pm Friday 6th September 2013 in Sport
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has arrived in Falmouth courtesy of a brand new sports club offering classes coached by a UK and European champion.
Cornwall Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teacher and owner Raphael Dos Santos (pictured) was a gold medallist at the BJJ British Open this year. He now hopes to pass on his skills to students in Falmouth and build on the success of his already-established clubs in Blackwater and Newquay.
The sport, which focuses on grappling and ground fighting, was developed by the legendary Gracie family in Brazil, and has become popular with modern day mixed martial artists and Ultimate Fighting Championship competitors.
“Brazilian Jui-Jitsu isn't about cage fighting, it's about self defence, fitness and a warm family environment,” said Raphael.
"The success of the martial art in Cornwall has been fantastic. We don't encourage violence in any way and are keen to spread the word of BJJ across the area to help bring some of the success we have seen in other areas across Cornwall to Falmouth."
Classes are every Friday starting this week at the Falmouth Sports Club Martial Arts Hall, currently run by the So8 Gym, on Western Terrace.
Sessions cost £5.00 per person, and run between 6pm and 8pm. There is funding available for students between the ages of 14 -25 years-old which will cover the cost of training for up to six weeks.
