Pirates finish promising pre-season with victory over Bath
To conclude their pre-season friendlies the Cornish Pirates travelled to the home of Bath Rugby, the 'Rec', on Saturday, to play Bath University.
A win for the Cornish side was always on the cards, and a 10 tries to one try-count in their favour confirms this, but both teams still derived benefit from the contest.
The match at Bath's famous Recreation Ground, which is alongside the River Avon in the heart of the historic city, was played in three thirds, and in the opener the Pirates scored five tries through hooker Aaron Carpenter (2), centre Rheon James, lock Gary Johnson and wing Craig Holland. The latter also converted two.
Taking a 29-0 lead into the second session Holland scored two further tries tries to register a personal hat-trick, and replacement Tom Kessell also added a further seven points with a try and a conversion, thus putting the Pirates 46-0 up.
In a slightly shorter final third the 'Uni' side managed their one converted score, whilst tries for the Pirates were scored by Kieran Goss and replacement Kieran Hallett, who also slotted a conversion.
Commenting after the game, Cornish Pirates' Head Coach, Ian Davies, said: “Speaking to Aaron James, the Head of Rugby at Bath University, he felt that his side will have benefited from playing us, as it provided a more physical encounter that they are used to. Aaron was impressed with Craig Holland and Mike Pope, who he coached when they were with England Students, and he also felt flanker Matt Bolwell showed up well for one so young.”
Ian added: “This game gave us a worthy final pre-season run out, plus it provided further important game time to players such as Laurie McGlone, Junior Fatialofa and Kieran Goss, who have recovered from injuries.”
