One and All breeze past Camelford in season opener
8:34am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Sport
Falmouth One and All 26
In perfect playing conditions, Falmouth made a promising start to the season with a 26-7 win at the Tregenver Playing field last Saturday, writes Jeff Maddern.
The score does not reflect the closeness of the game but Falmouth were able to turn pressure into points, whereas Camelford could not, mainly due to the resolute defence of the home side.
Falmouth kicked off and immediately put pressure on the visitors defence and with only five minutes on the clock won quick ball from a ruck to allow Anthony Gilbert to slice the defence apart, gifting a pass to Mike Eva to touch down out wide at the school end.
Eva missed the difficult conversion and the ‘One & All’ were off to a flying start.
Falmouth now started to dominate the loose and set pieces, forcing some excellent tackling from the visitors. But just before half time Falmouth were back on the score board with a well-worked try starting from quick line out ball from Charlie Sanders, which enabled Eva to time his pass and put Gilbert in under the posts.
Eva added the extra points for Falmouth to lead 12-0 at half-time.
In the second half Falmouth continued to dominate the game, but paid the price for getting turned over at a ruck, allowing Dan Risden to charge 40 metres to score under the posts.
Camelford converted to bring the game back to a five point margin, but it was short lived as captain Pete Collect picked up from the back of a ruck to sprint 15 metres to touch down between the sticks.
Gilbert added the extras and Falmouth were back in the driving seat at 19-7. The last try was probably the best with Charlie Sanders winning quick ball at a line out to allow the backs to spin the ball across the line for a basic run in for Pete Collets second try of the afternoon. Gilbert converted to bring the final score to Falmouth 26 pts Camelford 7 pts.
Scott Marshall, Leigh Head and Alex Bulloock all had storming games for the forwards with Pete Collett and Mike Eva the pick of the bunch in the backs, but it was Anthony Gilbert who was awarded the coveted `Man of the Match` for his strong running and solid defence.
