Pirates open league campaign against Bristol in Exeter on Sunday
The eagerly awaited new 'Greene King IPA Big Rugby Weekend' Championship is upon us, about to feature a triple bill of double header fixtures at three neutral venues.
For the Cornish Pirates they will open their league season on Sunday with a 'double header' match at Sandy Park, Exeter, against Bristol.
The match against 'Bris' has a little added interest, as the home side has won the last nine matches played between the two teams. On this occasion, however, neither side will have home advantage, for Sandy Park, as mentioned, is a neutral venue.
Scrum-half Gavin Cattle starts his seventh campaign as captain of the Pirates, and in his team ready for action there is a mix of both familiar faces and fresh arrivals. The new faces are lock James Sandford, flanker Joel Conlon, centre Rheon James, wing James Tincknell, and full-back Craig Holland. Others on the bench are Aaron Carpenter, Jack Andrew, Matt Bolwell and Angus Sinclair.
Commenting ahead of Sunday, Head Coach Ian Davies said: “Bristol are going to be right up there as the season progresses, as they have an experienced coaching team and side. Sunday should be a fantastic occasion and we are all looking forward to it.”
