Andy Hicks to play exhibition match at Helston's Godolphin Club
Despite taking a break from the professional game, South West snooker star Andy Hicks will be back in action this weekend when he takes on the great and good at Helston's Godolphin Club in a special exhibition match, sponsored by Falmouth's Balti Curries restaurant.
Tavistock-born Andy, whose tour nickname is 'The Cream of Devon,' last competed professionally in March this year, but after finishing the season ranked 65 in the world he decided to take a break to consider his future in the sport.
"Falling out of the top 64 puts me back to an amateur level, which means I'd have to go through qualifiers to get back on the tour," Andy said, "so it was a good opportunity for me to take some time out and re-evaluate things before deciding what I want to do. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it to a certain degree, but I've got a young family, and it's nice to spend time with them at home while they're growing up."
Andy, who is also a fully qualified World Snooker coach, said he was expecting a tough test from some of the Godolphin Club’s players on Saturday, but after making several centuries at an exhibition match in St Ives last month, he's confident spectators will be treated to some top-class snooker.
"I still play a pretty good game!" he said. "I probably should have made a 147 in St Ives, but I couldn't quite manage it.
"Normally you play a lesser standard of players in exhibitions, but there have been some good players to come out of the Godolphin Club. If I play 15 games on Saturday, you can probably say that ten of the 15 people I play will be capable of making 100 breaks. I expect them to be quite strong."
Andy will be sponsored at the event by Falmouth restaurant Balti Curries, whose owner Hem Sharma has been a long-time supporter of his.
"The Balti have been really good to me," Andy said. "They've helped me out with sponsorship for the last eight or nine years and it's always great to have their support."
The exhibition match takes place at 7pm this Saturday, September 14, at the Godolphin Club, on Wendron Street in Helston. For more information contact the club on 01326 573282.
