Late score from Withycombe grounds Eagles at the Recreation Ground
FALMOUTH EAGLES 20
Falmouth Eagles' first home game of the season ended in a narrow defeat against much fancied Withycombe on Saturday.
But the home side will be kicking themselves that they coulnd't hang on to make it two wins out of two after a late try saw Withy snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The visitors started the better of the two sides, and raced into an early lead thanks to Rob Hayes's converted try, followed by a quick counter attack which resulted in Sam Conway dotting down.
But Falmouth battled their way back into the game, and slowly but surely the Eagles' pack began to turn the screw.
Paul Saberton put the first points on the scorebaord for Falmouth with a couple of penalty kicks, before Tom Spiller went over for a try that Saberton converted to put the Eagles into the lead.
After the break Falmouth's pack continued to enjoy the better of the exchanges, and a powerful driving maul saw captain Tony Whittle go over to extend their lead. Saberton once again converted and Falmouth looked a safe bet to claim the win.
But back came Withycombe, and a Pugsley penalty reduced the arrears to set up a nervous finale.
Then right at the death a swift counter attack saw Ben Mardell race clear to touch down, and Pugsley held his nerve to add the extras and steal the win for the Devon side.
