Devoran Gig Club return to Newquay for rescheduled County Championships
7:00am Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
Devoran Gig Club had the opportunity to row in the rescheduled Mens County Championships at Newquay last Saturday, following the postponement of the competition two weeks earlier due to an accident.
The drama of the previous competition when the Cadgiwth boat upturned and the crew needed to be rescued, saw the A crew battle through to the quarter-final stage despite an unseated rudder and one of the crew losing his oar in the heat stages, so it was with eager anticipation that the crew readied themselves for a weekend of tough racing.
It looked to be shaping up for another dramatic weekend as late on Friday afternoon one of the rowers sustained a football related injury which meant the crew were a man down with fewer than twelve hours to the start of the racing.
An urgent call went out appealing for another Club rower to fill-in and, despite having done very little rowing since the World Championships last May, up stepped Nick Brennan, local cartoonist and Supervet rower.
On yet another blustery day and in challenging seas, the Devoran rowers battled the elements and other crews but were unable to progress any further.
However, a final position in the top thirty boats of ninety that started the competition means that Devoran achieved their best result in recent memory. A delighted Nick Brennan said: "Months of not training really paid off as I was able to come to the A Crew well rested and fresh for the race."
The County Championship has proved to be very memorable this year and thanks to the true spirit of Devoran Gig Club pulling together, the Mens A Crew achieved one of their best results in the Club's history.
The Devoran Mens A Crew were Cox: Ellie Truscott, Rowers: Adam Roberts, Nick Brennan, Steve Holley, Joth Heywood, Dan Letch, Andrew Mulhern.
