Drama at Bickland Park as Bodmin secure stoppage time victory over Falmouth Town.
FALMOUTH TOWN 1
BODMIN TOWN 2
An injury time goal from Bodmin's Luke Hodge condemned Falmouth Town to defeat against the league champions at Bickland Park, but the game will be remembered for a moment of controversy involving Bodmin keeper Kevin Miller and Falmouth striker Andy Westgarth.
Falmouth were leading by a goal to nil thanks to Dominic Batchelor's back post header in the 65th minute when Miller was involved in an anrgy exchange with Westgarth inside the six yard box.
As the two squared up to each other, Miller appeared to raise his hands and grab the Town forward around the throat.
Referee Lee Mitchell waved away protests from Falmouth players, and instead gave both Miller and Westgarth a talking to.
Minutes later Bodmin broke down the left, and a ball into the box dropped to Sam Matthews who slammed a low drive past Danny Burrows and into the bottom corner.
Then two minutes into extra time, as both sides pushed hard for a winner, a lofted ball over the top of the Town defence found Luke Hodge in acres of space, and he slid his shot under Burrows to seal the win.
It was harsh on Falmouth, who were comfortably the better side over 90 minutes.
New signing Gary Bell had a superb game alongside Ross Pope at the heart of the Falmouth midfield, but Town's standout performer was lone striker Westgarth.
His ability to hold the ball up and pick out a pass helped Falmouth set up wave after wave of attacks during a first half in which they dominated.
After the break Bodmin improved, but Falmouth matched them, eventually pulling ahead when Pope's deep cross picked out Batchelor at the back post, and he steered his header back across Miller and into the far corner.
Falmouth continued to press with Ed Timmons's snatched effort forcing Miller into a good save, and substitute Paul Cox's near-post cross almost finding the head of Dan Richardson.
But after the incident involing Miller and Westgarth Bodmin fashioned a chance of their own, and Sam Matthews made no mistake from 12 yards out.
Town poured forward looking for a winner, but in doing so left holes at the back.
And it was into one such hole that Luke Hodge ran after a hopeful punt down the middle bypassed the Falmouth back four.
Hodge took a touch, looked up, and held his nerve to slide his shot into the bottom corner and claim all three points for Darren Gilbert's side.
