THE Falmouth Winter Mixed Triples League continued on Friday afternoon  in gusty and windy conditions, making bowling a bit of a lottery as the wind knocked over scoreboards and sent various designs of hats airborne and scattered across the rinks, writes Ron Medlyn.

These conditions did not favour the leading two teams in the league as both suffered heavy defeats.

League leaders, Falmouth’s Underdogs, skipped by Melville Angel, Carol Pereir 2 and Jenny Dunstone leading were against Penryn’s Saracens, skipped by Mike Walker, Bob Hocking 2 and Carole Hocking at lead.

The Saracens made a great start to lead 10-1 after six ends. The Underdogs made a recovery to get within 8-13 in arrears by the 12th end, but the Saracens then turned the heat up to score 3-2 in an eight shots in one end to now take a 26-8 lead, finishing 29-10 winners.

Falmouth’s Allsorts skipped by Mike Pheby, Ron Medlyn 2 and Marjorie Brotherton leading were to play the Mavericks, skipped by Malcolm Dearnley, Pam Dearnley 2 and Walter Brotherton at lead.

The Allsorts took a 3-1 lead after three, but were to remain on three for the next six ends as the Mavericks took the lead 7-3 and after getting off the three mark the Allsorts then got stuck again on four for five ends as the Mavericks now went 18-4 into the lead. Rarely have Mike or Ron bowled so badly as they struggled to find length and line and became very frustrated as the wind buffeted their bowls off line.

However, it was the same for both sides and on the day the Mavericks were the best team with Malcolm Dearnley the only bowler on the rink with any consistency and he saved many shots.
Eventually the Mavericks won the game 19-8 and deserved their win and the Allsorts were glad to finish this game to end their frustration – that’s bowls!

Falmouth’s Diehards skipped by Carol Taylor, Chris Chatterton 2 and Nick Fletcher leading against Pointers skipped by Les Pooley, Norman Aubrey 2 and Sheila Harris at lead.

The Diehards started well to lead 15-1 after ten ends and they continued their dominance right to the end of the game winning 21-5 as the Pointers found themselves outclassed by the Diehards.

The afternoon’s result saw a big shake up in the league as the Saracens now take over as league leaders and the Allsorts drop to fourth place.
