Callington Town 4 Penryn Athletic 3

Last season's beaten semi-finalsts Penryn Athletic were knocked out of the Cornwall Senior Cup in the second round by a strong Calllington side after a close game at Ginsters Marshfields Parc.

It was tough on Penryn who, because of the stringent cup rules, were forced to play the injured Chris Symons in goal despite the ever-present keeper sustaining an injury at training on Thursday night.

Steve Jewell was unable to find a replacement in time for the weekend, and Symons graciously agreed to soldier on.

The first 20 minutes gave no indication of the drama to come, with both sides relatively quiet and content to pass it around.

But the deadlock was broken when a speculative ball forward from Callington captain Gary Williams swerved wickedly and went straight in just under Symons's crossbar.

It was a blow for the visitors, but there was worse to come minutes later when Penryn were guilty of trying to play their way out of trouble at the back, and were caught in possession.

Luke Avis-Riordan nipped in to intercept a wayward pass, and he raced clear to hammer a low drive into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Symons had no chance.

From there on it was an uphill battle for Penryn as Cally, who thumped Helston Athletic 5-1 in their last match, took control.

Callington's third came when tricky forward Carlton Farnham, their most impressive player on the day, came down heavily after a challenge inside the box.

Farnham stepped up to tuck away the spot kick, wrapping his foot around it to send the ball into the corner.

It was a poor penalty for Penryn to give away.

Player restrictions meant Steve Jewell was forced to name himself as a substitute, and the Penryn manager saw action when midfielder Ryan Chinn suffered a nasty gash in a feisty challenge which cut through his boot and sock.

And the introduction of Penryn's player manager also heralded their first goal of the afternoon, when Dale Band received the ball, took on the Callington defence, and rifled a shot into the far corner past the outstretched arm of Sam Borthwick.

Hope for Penryn, perhaps? Farnham thought otherwise.

A mis-kick in the 67th minute saw the Cally forward pounce on the loose ball, before playing a pass out to Luke Avis-Riordan, who lifted his shot over the onrushing Symons.

Despite it looking as though the game was slipping away from them, Penryn kept plugging away, and five minutes later Band scored his second.

The veteran midfielder showed a touch of class to side-step his marker, dummy a defender, and cut inside the box before lashing a low shot into the back of the net off the inside of the far post.

Then with seven minutes to go David Broglino set up a frantic finale when he picked his spot from the edge of the box with a terrific shot.

But time was the enemy, and despite Penryn finishing strongly, Callington were worthy winners on the day.

It's back to business in division one west next Saturday as Penryn host bottom club Foxhole Stars at Kernick Road.
