Falmouth Town  0  Illogan RBL 2

Falmouth Town were powerless to prevent Illogan from moving level on points with St Day at the top of the Jolly’s Cornwall Combination League after the defending champions won comfortably at Bickland Park.

Town went into the game without a league win in their last six outings, and true to form it was the defending champions who made all the running early on.

But despite seeing more of the ball, Illogan were unable to find a way past Ethan Fearne in the Falmouth goal, and the game remained goalless at half time.

Illogan maintained their pressure after the break, but Town defended stubbornly until the 56th minute when Sam Waters struck the opener following some good movement between youngster Jack Coleman and Matt Roberts.

Four minutes later, buoyed by their goal, Illogan struck again through Waters, who had Luke Abbott-Smith and Joe Carlyon to thank in the build up.

Falmouth’s promising start to the season seems to have faded away, with Marc Rose and Danny Knowles’s side slipping to ninth in the table on the back of Saturday’s defeat.

But victory for Illogan keeps title rivals St Day looking over their shoulders.

Goonhavern 2 Hayle 3

Goonhavern appear to be mired in a three-way battle to avoid relegation, and despite a gritty performance at home against Hayle they ended the day pointless and still anchored to the bottom of the table.

It was a much improved showing from the home side, but they never really recovered from conceding three first half goals.

Hayle’s league form has tailed off in recent weeks, making victory over struggling sides like Goonhavern all the more important.

They went a goal up through Ben Clarke early on, before Ewan Harris tapped in from close range.

Andrew Morris replied for Goonhavern, but Matt Thomas hammered a shot high into the net to give Hayle a two goal lead at the break.

And despite Goonhavern scoring a second through Chris Lock, Hayle held on for the win.

RNAS Culdrose 2 Perranwell 2

Culdrose twice took the lead at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, only to allow Perranwell back into the game with some sloppy defending.

The Services went a goal up after five minutes when Paul Simmons latched on to Lee Martin’s through ball to thump in the opener.

But Perranwell hit back just before the break when Jimmy Thompson nodded in Matt Lane’s cross from all of three yards out.

And the Services went 2-1 up on the stroke of half time when Simmons saw his shot parried into the path of Jamie Adams, who tapped in.

It stayed that way until ten minutes before time when Matt Rowe nodded in the equaliser from a cross on the left.

Culdrose stay 19th, two points above Hayle, and two behind Newquay.

Porthleven 2 Penryn Athletic 1

Porthleven gave their survival hopes a real shot in the arm with victory at Gala Parc against Penryn Athletic on Saturday, although the Fishermen remain in desperate trouble at the foot of the table.

Two second half goals did the damage for Port, but Penryn will be disappointed not to have scored more after missing a slew of chances and hitting the bar in the dying seconds.

Marcus Smith was the hero on the day for Porthleven. It was his brace that secured all three points for the home side, but they had to come from behind to do it.

Tom Campbell fired Penryn into an early lead from a cross by Sam Bromely, the ball ricocheting into the back of the net off the underside of the crossbar.

But Port weren’t behind for long.

Smith’s first came via the penalty spot. The Port striker saw his shot saved by Jamie Gray in the Penryn goal but was on his toes to follow up and tuck away the rebound.

His second came two minutes before time after he broke clear of the Penryn defence to steer a shot past Gray and into the bottom corner.

Penryn’s Ryan Reeve hit the crossbar with a fierce drive from 20 yards out on the stroke of time, but at the other end Gray needed to be alert to prevent Smith from completing his hat-trick.
