Camborne 35 Bridgewater 0

Camborne rounded off their pre-Christmas fixtures in style sweeping to a comprehensive victory over their Somerset visitors.

Town reach the seasonal break in fifth place in the South West One table with all to play for in the remaining games beginning with successive away trips to relegation threatened Devon sides in 2014.

At a windswept Recreation Ground the home side made a single change to their starting line up giving a full debut to James Briant at centre and he responded with a fine display.

The Cherry & Whites laid the foundations for the win by monopolising possession in a superbly disciplined first half performance against the wind and slope that saw them turn around six points in front. In doing so full back Joe Parma, lock Ben Kemp and No 8 Dave Roberts were often to the fore carrying the ball for big yards whilst hooker Sam Bartle was always in the action.

The visitors were starved of possession throughout the opening quarter and eventually a well judged penalty from David Mankee gave the home side a 29th minute advantage after a determined Kemp run had set up field position.

As the interval neared Town were hammering at the Bridgewater line and when the inevitable penalty was conceded by the desperate defence scrum half Mankee slotted it from under the posts to double the lead.

Camborne were quick to capitalise on the elements after the resumption with a blind side attack from a scrum seeing Mankee send the elusive Parma speeding over into the scoreboard corner for the opening try.

Midway through the half the outstanding Roberts charged over on an angled run to the goal line for 16-0. Almost immediately the unfortunate Bridgewater full back could only find right wing Rob Floyd with a misjudged pass that he delightfully accepted to romp over from 30 metres for a soft try. Mankee’s duly booted the straightforward conversion to put his team out of sight at 23-0.

Inside the last ten minutes the home side deservedly bagged the crucial bonus point touchdown when Roberts barged over for his 2nd score off the back of a close range scrum. Mankee added the extras to make it 30-0.

Saving their best for last Camborne then emphasised their almost total domination with a fine handling move that ended with Floyd crossing on the right flank to complete his brace and cap an emphatic win.
