Eagles coach Phil Angove said he was ‘relieved’ after Saturday’s stunning result against Veor, but took no pleasure from seeing another side suffer such a heavy defeat.

The Eagles were in rare form, running in eleven unanswered tries to banish the memory of their chastening defeat away at Hayle the week before.

“I’m very pleased with the way we played,” he said. “Relieved more than anything, if I’m honest.
“I have no idea why, but we were very poor against Hayle - I think it’s the worst I’ve seen us play since I’ve been at the club and I take full responsibility for that. So to come back and score eleven tries is obviously very pleasing.

“We can’t change what happened the week before, but the result speaks for itself. I thought we played brilliantly as a whole.”

Despite the result, Angove was quick to heap praise on visitors Voer who have struggled since making the step up from Cornwall  League 1 this season.

“Veor were magnificent considering they’re basically a junior side,” he said. “I don’t take any pleasure in seeing a side take a beating like that, but they kept going, and it was a good clean game with no incidents whatsoever.

“We just did what we had to do and were lucky enough to hit some form.”

Falmouth moved up to fourth spot in the Cornwall and Devon League as a result of their win, but  Angove said he expected Exeter University and Tiverton to battle it out for the title.

“I think it’s all a bit cosmetic,” he said. “The top two are running away with it at the moment.
“As far as I’m concerned they’re out of reach, but if we can end up in the top four then I think that’s pretty good going.”

Falmouth travel to another of the league’s struggling sides, Newquay, this weekend looking to build on Saturday’s performance.
