Camborne 26 Coney Hill 10
Camborne edged closer to the top two teams in South West One with an assured win over their Gloucestershire visitors at a windswept Recreation Ground.
Town efficiently collected the bonus point with a controlled team performance in heavy conditions against a spirited Coney Hill side that lead 10-7 at one stage.
Despite facing the slope the home side made a dream start going in front with a 3rd minute converted try. Right wing Rob Floyd emerged from an early driving maul to race 35 metres skipping past the final defender before touching down at the posts. David Mankee easily added the extras.
The relegation threatened visitors then managed a pair of unconverted tries wide on the flanks before the Cherry & Whites regained the advantage.
On 25 minutes the hardworking home forwards made a series of powerful thrusts towards the visiting try line which ended with flanker Cameron Bone being driven over under the crossbar. Fly half Mankee again knocked over the regulation conversion.
Floyd just failed to complete his brace following up his fly hack ahead before as the interval neared Camborne went further in front. Left wing Laurie Manna did well running back a Coney Hill drop out to set up a good field position and when the ball was recycled full back Alex Ducker sped over on the left wing for a well worked score. Mankee again converted for a 21-10 lead at the break.
With conditions deteriorating further scores were always going to be difficult to come by in the 2nd half but the Cherry & Whites bagged their decisive bonus point try on the hour.
After a sustained period of pressure in which the home pack sent the visiting eight backwards at a series of 5 metre scrums a rolling maul surged over the goal line in the scoreboard corner with No 8 David Roberts credited with the crucial final touchdown.
Late on replacement scrum half Jamie Briant was injured making a telling stop in the turnstile corner and with ‘Town’ out of sight the referee signalled the end of proceedings.
Camborne will face a stern examination of their promotion credentials this weekend when they travel to Somerset to meet North Petherton who like the Cherry & Whites currently lie in a share of 3rd place in the table.
