Wendron United kept in touch with Illogan at the top of the Cornwall Combination League with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Falmouth Town reserves at Underlane.

The 'dron raced into a three goal lead at half time despite manager Paul Murray feeling his side were far from their best.

"We didn't play well at all if I'm honest," he said. "But then again when you don't play well and you score five goals and keep a clean sheet you can't really complain.

"I'd rather not play very well and win, than play brilliantly and only draw."

Justin Searle opened the scoring for Wendron after he latched on to Sam Care's through ball before rounding Town keeper Ethan Fearn and tapping into an empty net.

And Wendron went two up when some good build up play between Steve Brewer and Chris Mulroy ended with a cutback for Ryan Tressider, who curled a shot into the bottom corner.

Searle made it three before the break, racing clear after a long ball down the middle to slide a shot past Fearn from 18 yards out.

The Town keeper made a string of good saves after the restart, but Wendron scored a fourth when Mulroy rounded two defenders and drove a shot into the bottom corner.

The game petered out after that, but there was still time for a fifth late on as Luke Wort broke his goal drought with a real striker's finish, tapping in from close range under pressure.

The result means Wendron move within four points of second place Ludgvan, who were held to a 4-4 draw by beleaguered St Day.

St Day were hit with a hefty 21 point deduction by the league earlier in the week for fielding inelligible players.

And despite Matt Harris's side being title contenders for much of the season, they find themselves languishing in 13th place.

Elsewhere Illogan maintained their grip on top spot with a hard-earned 4-2 win over Perranwell at Oxland Parc, despite having captain Simon Ellis sent off.

Jason Roberts scored a brace for the home side, with Dan Richards and Jack Coleman chipping in wth a goal apiece.

But Porthleven's miserable season continued with a seven goal thumping at Gala Parc against Redruth United.

Tony Roberts's side are now four points adrift at the bottom of the table, having played a game more than second from bottom Goonhavern.

But the day's biggest winners were Mullion, who hammered St Agnes 8-0 at home.

Full Combination League results were as follows:

Hayle 1 - 1 St Ives Town
Illogan RBL 4 - 2 Perranwell
Ludgvan 4 - 4 St Day
Mullion 8 - 0 St Agnes
Porthleven 0 - 7 Redruth United
RNAS Culdrose 3 - 0 Falmouth Ath
St Just 4 - 1 Newquay
Troon 4 - 1 Goonhavern
Wendron United 5 - 0 Falmouth Town
