Burnham too strong for battling Borough
4:21pm Sunday 6th April 2014 in Sport
Burnham-on-Sea 26 Penryn 12
Penryn battled to the very end in Somerset, but home side Burnham-on-Sea proved simply too strong.
The occasion marked the penultimate game of the season for Paul Trevaskis's side, who will be eager to finish what has been a testing league campaign on a high.
But Burnham took the game by the scruff of the neck early on, and never really let go.
A string of early penalties conceded by the Borough pack resulted in a penalty try being awarded, which Burnham's Tim Piper duly converted.
Then a brace of quick scores put Burnham firmly on top.
First Mike Hockin addded a second try following some loose play from Penryn, with Piper again on target with the extras.
Then Tom Chaffey's chip and chase resulted in him dotting down to put the home side into a 19-0 lead.
But just before the break Penryn managed a try of their own when prop Kirk Oldfield bulldozed his way over the line, only for the conversion to miss.
After the break Penryn were much-improved until late in the half when Burnham put the Borough under pressure from a lineout, and Sam Coles dived over in the corner to score. Piper converted.
Penryn never gave up, and were rewarded for their efforts late on when Mitch Vague completed a flowing move to score, with Peacock on target with the boot to add the extras.
Penryn tries: Oldfield, M Vague; Cons: Peacock.
Burnham tries: Pen try, Hockin, Chaffey, Coles; Cons: Piper (3).
ELSEWHERE in the league Truro overcame Devonport Services 14-37 away from home, St Ives beat Paignton Saxons 14-48, and Bude edged past Kingsbridge 26-19.
Teignmouth kept up the pressure on league leaders Ivybridge by running in six tries against Wellington to win 14-36, but the Bridgers were in no mood to give up ground in the title hunt, winning 41-13 against Torquay Athletic.
