PENRYN’s hopes of securing a fifth place finish in division one west were given a welcome boost at Bodieve Park on Saturday after Steve Jewell’s side saw off Wadebridge by a single goal.

The Bridgers went into the game off the back of four consecutive victories, and with last season’s top scorer Dan Jennings back at the club they pose a potent threat going forward.

But Penryn are themselves much improved after suffering a wobble around Christmas time.

Jewell’s side travelled with a bare eleven, forcing the Penryn boss to name himself and assistant Pete Davey on the subs’ bench.

The game was, for the most part, evenly contested, but Wadebridge will be disappointed to have come away empty handed after creating plenty of chances.

The best of them fell to Jennings in the first half, while Ed Wilton had Penryn’s best opportunity at the other end as the two sides went in at the break with the game finely poised at 0-0.

Penryn started the second half well, and were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 62nd minute when winger Kevin Lawrence cut inside his marker on the edge of the box and fired a shot across Wadebridge keeper Ben Hurst, which went in off the upright.

Wadebridge came back at Penryn, forcing them to defend in numbers, with Jennings once again spurning a good goal scoring opportunity, and teammate Connor Mewton hitting the post.

But Penryn held firm, and might even have extended their lead deep into stoppage time when another Lawrence effort rebounded off the crossbar and Wadebridge managed to scramble the ball clear.

Penryn face a tough home game against Moushole on Tuesday night, before travelling to St Dennis this weekend where they will hope to cement their place as a top five side.

Which looks increasingly likely. Their last two games are against bottom side Foxhole Stars, followed by a home game against Holsworthy. Jewell will expect his side to take points from both.

And given how topsy turvy the season has been for Penryn, a fifth place finish is something the club can rightly be proud of.
