94 players teed off at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday in near perfect conditions for the Churchill Trophy where the top 16 gross scores qualify for the scratch match play knockout.

Andy Parry better known in footballing circles (that may change!) produced an inspired round to win, with a splendid net 63. His gross of 81 also earned him a place in the scratch match play competition for the first time.

His round didn't start very promisingly with a double bogey at the first, but his competitive spirit is such that he soon put things back on track with birdies at the 7th. 15th. and 18th. holes to win by two strokes. Andy had a bit of a scare at the seventeenth after taking three off the tee before carding a double bogey seven but following his deserved win Andy put his success down to his putting with seven putts dropping in from 8 feet +. Runner up was Crispen Merritt who also played well despite a double bogey at the first before going on to card birdie at the 2nd. 7th.  8th.and 11th  holes on his way to a net 65. Ian Renshaw also played solidly for third place including birdies at the 6th. and 16th. holes for a net 67. Just enough to edge Callum Davis into fourth place on countback.

Nicky Chinn returned the best gross of the day 71 with a rock solid round. One over the competition scratch for the day.

This Saturday is a “major” day at Falmouth with the prestigious Rider Cup being played for over 36 holes with an evening presentation.
