The light showers which fell throughout the day did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the athletes who took part in last weekend's Cornwall Track and Field Championships at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre, where three new County Records and eleven Championship Best Performances were set.

Paddy Swan (Cornwall AC), one of the day's six triple winners improved his own Under 17 discus County Record by 79 centimetres, with a best distance of 51 metres 21, which confirmed his third position in the Under 17 UK rankings for this event. Swan completed his gold medal haul winning the shot (14metres 45), which ranks him at number seven in the UK and the hammer, throwing 43 metres 99.

A ten second improvement in the Under 15 3000m County Record by Sian Temple (Tavistock AC), clocking an impressive 10.17.6, moved her up to fifth place in the UK rankings for her age group, with Neil Tunstall (Cornwall AC) rocketing to the top of the UK rankings in the Veteran 50-54 age group, improving on his own Veteran county record by 0.2 seconds in the 100 metre hurdles, crossing the line in 14.5.

Two Newquay and Par athletes smashed the respective Championship Best Performances with Lily England knocking the huge margin of 32.5 seconds off the Under 17 1500 metres steeplechase Championship Record with a new time of 5.47.8 and Maria Brett improving her UK top ten ranking marginally to number 9, once again beating her own Under 20 Championship Best Performance set last year, by the significant distance of 3 metres 12.

Two of Cornwall AC's talented young athletes, Molly Caudery and Georgia Doyle-Lay not only won three events each but set new championship best performances in the process. Molly won the Under 15 75m hurdles (12.8), high jump (1 metre 50), before reaching new heights in the pole vault, equalling her personal best of 3 metres 20 (UK ranked number 2) and beating the previous best set last year by training partner Rebecca Gray by 30 centimetres. England Schools multi event international Georgia won the Under 17 200 metres (27.61), the long jump (4 metres 90), before adding just 3 centimetres to the championship triple jump record, leaping 10 metres 61.

In 2013 Sam Robins (Newquay Par) cleared 1 metre 80 in the Under 17 Men's high jump, joining three other athletes in a share of the Championship Record. This year county record holder Sam cleared 1 metre 81, to claim the Championship Best Performance outright in his last season in this age group.

It's not often the UK Under 20 number 2 (Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Cornwall AC) and UK Under 20 number 3 (Molly Long, Truro School) line up against in the same race at the Cornwall Championships but on this occasion the most eagerly awaited race of the day was well worth waiting for. Both chose to avoid their preferred 800 metre ranking distance, opting for the faster 400 metres as part of their training for the two lap event. A determined Charlotte powered off at the start and moved into a clear lead by halfway and despite fading a little in the home straight, crossed the line in 56.8, with the faster finisher Molly just 0.3 seconds behind. The quality of these performances is clearly evident when the record books show the record holder to be the British Senior 800 metre international and Newquay Par athlete Jemma Simpson, who ran 56.0 in these championships eleven years ago. Molly returned to action later in the day and set a new Championship Best Performance in the Under 20 200 metres, sprinting home in 25.6.

One could feel sorry for the field event official in the Under 17 Women's discus He must have been really 'browned off' The event was won in a new championship best performance by Cornwall AC's Molly Brown with a fine throw of 34 metres 84, improving the record by the significant distance of 2 metres 23. In second place was Newquay Par's Natalie Brown (21 metres 45) with club mate Ami Brown (11 metres 78) in third. Earlier in the day Molly won the hammer (34 metres 13) to complete a successful day for the family, with her brother Jack, winning the Under 15 Boys discus (21 metres 37).

There were further Championship Best Performances achieved by Jack Wightman (Newquay Par) who improved the Under 20 200 metre record by 0.3, coming home in 22.6 and the evergreen Bobby Kingman (Newham and Essex Beagles) who added 60 centimetres to the Veteran's pole vault record clearing 4.00 metres.

There were also Championship Best marks set by Matilda Shields (Truro School) and Layia Stuart (Truro High School) in their respective Under 15 and Under 17 javelin events, with both girls benefiting from new javelin weight introduced in 2014. Matilda's winning throw was 26 metres 60 and Layia's 26 metres 29.

The top Under 13 athlete of the day was Frank Holmes (Cornwall AC), who was the only Under 13 competitor to win three events. Frank won the 100 metres (14.2), the 200 metres (29.4) and completed an impressive hat trick leaping 4 metres 41 in the long jump. In the Under 15 age group Rachel Howe (Newquay Par) dominated the track events coasting home in the 200 metres (27.9) and the 300 metres (45.2) before having a much closer race over 100 metres, sharing the same time of 13.4 with the runner up Jasmine Basford (Bodmin College). Cornwall AC's Rebecca Gray was a clear winner of the Under 17 Women's 80 metre hurdles (12.6) and also the high jump (1 metre 50), before completing her trio of gold medals with a top class performance in her main event the pole vault. Rebecca set a new personal best of 3 metres 50, retaining her third spot in the UK Under 17 Pole Vault Rankings and now only two centimetres down on the second ranked athlete.
