Callington 71 Falmouth 72-3

Falmouth got their season up and running with a comprehensive defeat of Callington on Saturday, by seven wickets. On an afternoon when the Red Arrows circled the skies above Trescobeas Falmouth ‘jetted’ to their first win if the season, with 58 overs to spare.

Callington have had a poor start to the season and events on Saturday will do little to boost morale at Moores Park. They got off to a rocky start after electing to bat. Falmouth were without Antony Angove but Glyn Furnival made an important early strike, bowling key anchorman Jake Libby for three, with the score at 13.

It got even better with George Popperwell trapping county skipper Matt Robins for eight. Popperwell then had James Long leg before as well and three wickets had fallen without a run added. Alex Robinson made 12 before being a second victim for Popperwell. Joe White and Aidan Libby took the score to 60 before White became the fifth wicket to fall, for 18.

Any hopes of a late rally didn’t materialise as the visitors last five wickets fell for as many runs. Furnival was the chief destroyer. He bowled unchanged from the pavilion end to take six for 28 from fifteen overs.

Popperwell took two for 17 from six overs. He was replaced by Liam Hoban who conceded seventeen runs from three overs. Arup Revandkar was more economical taking the wicket of Adrian Robins. He only conceded seven runs from 5.2 overs. Tom Dinnis was the last man to fall, run out by Popperwell in the thirtieth over.

Hopes of a trouble free Falmouth response were quickly put on the back burner. Jacob Stephens was leg before to Dinnis for nought with a single on the board. Two runs later Aidan Libby removed Revandkar for one. Consolidation was needed and it came from Stefan Churcher and Adrian Noott who added 45 for the third wicket. Churcher was caught by Robins off the bowling of Nick Parker for 17.

Noott (25no) and Craig Mouatt (16no) completed the comfortable victory that came at the start of the 21st over. Elsewhere on Saturday the surprise came at Werrington where an understrength Camborne beat the champions by 17 runs. Matt Rowe made 84 in their 200 for eight.

St Just’s good early season form continued with a six wicket home win against Redruth, who recovered from 14 for five at one stage to make 113. Truro were seventeen run winners at Newquay after being dismissed for 146.

Grampound Road are up to second in the table after defeating St Austell by six wickets, reaching their 159 target in only 25 overs.

Falmouth are at home again on Saturday (1pm) and will be looking for back to back wins with the visit of bottom side Redruth.
