THERE was a superb game at Beacon Park on Saturday with Helston going down to a narrow defeat.

Beacon clinched victory off the penultimate ball, in a game of over 500 runs.

After losing Stuart Pethick for a single Dan Jenkin and Chris Martin took the total to 68 before martin was bowled by Kris Martin for 19.

Ross Leathley soon followed for three and when Ben Rule was caught off Robert Hocking for eleven the home side were in a little bother at 108 for four. Mark Thomas joined Dan Jenkin however and the pair put on 77 for the fifth wicket.

Jenkin went for 94 having hit a six and twelve fours off 109 balls. Thomas went soon after for 42. Tommy Sturgess hit 28 and Steve Jenkin 21 to get the total past 250. Craig Thomas took three for 33 for the visitors. Jordan Thomas and Kris Martin took two each.

James Gool hit a maiden century for Beacon. He hit three sixes and eleven fours off 137 balls. He put on 96 for the first wicket with Rob Trembath (54) and 90 for the second with Dan Mellor (41).

At one stage Beacon were 185 for one but the home side fought back. It was led by Tom Retallack, playing his first game of the season. He took three for 54. Thirty runs were needed off the last five overs but Beacon scraped home, after needing six off the last.

Helston took eight bonus points from the match and remain in second spot. On Saturday they visit Ludgvan who had a big win at Menheniot Looe on Saturday.
