ROWERS from across the South West are all set for a regional championship Mevagissey this weekend.

The Tribute Cornish Pilot Gig Championships come to the shores of Pentewan Beach on Saturday and Sunday with clubs from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Bristol bringing their oars and boats to the water.

Five titles will be up for grabs during the two days with prizes for Men's A and B crews, Ladies A and B crews and the under 16s.

Martin Walton, secretary for Mevagissey Pilot Gig Club, who are the host club, said the competition should be an exciting spectacle and a rare chance to see so many clubs facing each other.

Walton said: “The Tribute Championship will be a fantastic celebration of gig rowing, bringing together crews from across the county for two days of racing and shore side entertainment.

“Apart from the World Championships, this will be the only time that all of the clubs can compete in the same place at the same time.”

The action will kick off at 9.30am on Saturday with the male and female A and B crews going into the water first for long races taking place first.

This will then be followed up in the afternoon by short sprint races for the same boats.

The following day will see the younger rowers getting the opportunity to show off their rowing skills with short sprint and races around the kite course.

Alongside the racing, crowds will be entertained by live music coupled with a karaoke and disco with festivities going on until 10.30pm on the first day and 7pm on Sunday.

Presentations will be made to the winning crews at 5pm on the last day.

Camping and caravanning is available over the weekend at Pentewan Sands along with free car parking.
