BOATS of all shapes and sizes sailed around Falmouth over the weekend as the Classics Rally and Regatta returned to the port.

More than 90 vessels came to the three-day event based around the town’s dock with boats ranging from 70ft pilot cutters, sailing gigs and a 14ft dinghy taking part.

Three boats from the National Maritime Museum also joined in the festivities which saw a series of races and a parade of sail and power take place in hot weather conditions.

Overall winners after the three days of racing included Brian Corbett who skippered Winifred in the E class, Richard Sadler taking the F class title on board Aeolus and Mike Maguire on board Dragonfly in G class.

The best performing K class boat of the weekend was Lyonesse captained by George Fairhurst while Nirvana helmed by Michael Biglin topped the R fleet charts with two wins and a second place finish during the event.

Buccaneer manned by Nick Leach won both the D fleet races, Henrietta captained by Michael Wilson was the top performer in H class and Lucy Anna, skippered by Neil Bridle, won the J fleet section.

A win and second place finish in two of the U fleet races was enough for Nina Lillie’s Tiger top this class while Richard Clapham on board Mascotte claimed the best M class score by winning two races and in the runners-up spot in the other.

On Saturday the parade saw many of the crews on board the ships get dressed up with some of the people involved wearing pirate and Viking costumes as they saluted the VIPs on their boat.
