SILVERWARE will be tagged along with bragging rights once again between Helston Athletic and Porthleven football clubs as two cups will be played for this season.

When games between the side’s first and reserve teams take place on Boxing Day it will mark the return of the FE Strike Mayor’s Cup and Tommy Strike Memorial Trophy being played for.

In the past both trophies were contested by the clubs during derby matches but the cups have not been played for since the 1960s. However, after being found in Porthleven’s clubhouse and a garden shed, the teams have decided to bring them back into use with the winner keeping hold of it for a year and the title being shared if the result is a draw.

On December 26, the Tommy Strike Trophy will be played for first between the two reserve sides before later the same day the first teams will clash for the Mayor’s Cup, created by former Porthleven mayor Frank Strike in 1956.

Chris Strike, the great-grandson of Frank, said it will be brilliant to have them up for grabs again.

Strike, who plays for Helston having previously be a part of Porthleven’s squad, said: “As a player involved in the games, it will add something to the occasion knowing there is a trophy to be won.

“There has been a lot of talk locally that there is animosity between our clubs, which is absolute rubbish.

“What playing for these cups will do is bring the clubs together even more and create a bit of fun and excitement behind the fixtures.”

Vidal James, secretary at Porthleven, hopes the return of the cup competition will create a bigger buzz around the games.

“The game used to have the feel of a derby like whenever Arsenal play Tottenham,” he said.

“It would be great to give it that sort of feel again and I think bringing in the factor of playing for the cups will be a great incentive to the players.”

Athletic’s chairman Paul Hendy said he is also looking forward to the trophies being played for.

Hendy said: “It will make the derby even more fun to watch I think and it will also probably be the first chance for both sides to win some silverware in the season, so there will be pride to play for.”
