CORNISH Rebels coach Jonny Platt said his team are confident of defending their South West Challenge Cup title on Saturday – although he has warned against arrogance.

The club head to Launceston to face off with Exeter Centurions for the final of the competition which they won last year.

Just a fortnight ago, the Rebels defeated their opponents this weekend 50-20 away and Platt believes this will give his lads a big psychological edge.

However, he added going into Saturday thinking the match has already been won is simply not an option.

Platt said: “I am quite confident to be fair.

“Seeing that we only played each other a couple of weeks ago, it is going to be a big mental battle for both sides.

“As long as we don’t go into Saturday thinking the game has already been won and acting cocky because we beat them comfortable recently, I think we will win.

“We did that going into last year’s league Grand Final but then we lost so it was a bit embarrassing, so we must avoid doing this again.”

Should the Rebels complete the task and find themselves lifting the cup again, Platt said he would be absolutely over the moon.

“When we won last year it was a brilliant feeling,” he said.

“Because we are the only rugby league team in Cornwall we are seen as underdogs.

“But because we are the team in the county, the players treat their shirts like they would if they were wearing a Cornwall jersey.

“There is so much pride in the squad and it will be an overwhelming feeling to win it again.”

Platt hopes the momentum from a win on Saturday can push the side onto winning the league.

He said: “Losing in the Grand Final was a big blow last season, but if we win the cup again I think this will give us more confidence chasing the league title as well.”
