CRICKET: Helston bowl Troon out for just 28
AS Jolly’s Drinks Cornwall Cricket League games go you’d be hard pressed to find many shorter than what took place at Beacon Park on Saturday, writes Michael Weeks.
On a remarkable afternoon the entire County Division One game between Helston and Troon lasted less than sixteen overs.
By 2.45pm it was all over – 75 minutes including the change of innings.
Helston, with three former Troon players in their ranks, the Jenkin brothers and Tommy Sturgess, needed a win but few would have expected such a one sided encounter.
Cornwall Under 15’s all rounder Tommy Sturgess took five for six off six overs in a superb spell.
Jordan Fulton with three for 19 and Tom Retallack, two for none off just three balls, completed the rout in less than an hour.
Mark Jenkin made 15 whilst seven visiting batsmen failed to score. There was trouble for Troon right from the start with Sturgess bowling Luke Johnson for a duck and Toby Whiteford for two.
Dan Walker was caught behind for a duck at 13-3.
Then disaster for the visitors as they lost four wickets with the score on 18.
Mark Jenkin was dismissed by Fulton for 15. Gavin Tregenza, Jamie Goldsworthy and Ben Page all followed without troubling the scorers to make it 18 for seven.
Daniel Wills and Adam Rodda added ten before the last three wickets all fell on 28.
Helston skipper Dan Jenkin was in no mood to hang around.
He hit a six and two fours in his 20 not out as Helston sped to victory in just nineteen balls. Walker’s two overs cost 21 on a day Troon will quickly want to forget.
With 20 points in the bag, the win rocketed Helston up from ninth to fifth in the Division One West table.
Helston face the long trip to Launceston on Saturday.
Their home game with Beacon was washed out last weekend due to the heavy showers in the east of the county.
